Subject: [ocba] Swarm call

There is a swarm at 241 Hales Wood Road in Chapel Hill. The homeowner and
beekeeper Moses Carey and I tried to get it last night. We got some bees but,
given then amount of bees still up the tree, may not have gotten the queen.

This swarm is about 25-30 feet up a small pine tree. We put a bucket under
them, tied to rope, soaked them with sugar syrup, and tried to shake them off
branch. We got about half but not all.

The complication is that they are not just on one branch, but converged out
on a limb, where several branches intersect. It may be possible to cut that
whole branch, if Dr. Carey will allow that, however, I did not see a branch
higher, that you could throw a rope over to hold the branch after cutting.

I would love to see someone be more successful than I was at collecting
these. If you go, please tell Moses Carey and me. And if you are successful,
please let us know how you did it!

We put what we did catch in a nuc, and also gave the nuc a frame with a
capped queen cell, so that if we did not catch queen, they would have one
about to emerge.

Thanks!

-Liz Lindsey
