Hello Fellow Beekeepers!

There are several upcoming events and presentations that we have been asked to host and participate in and we need some volunteers to help with some of them.  Below are several that are coming up that I would like to make you aware of.  Please let me know if you are interested and/or able to help out with any of them.

Durham Lion’s Club

We have received a request from the Durham Lion’s Club for a speaker to give a short presentation/discussion on the process of beekeeping and some seasonal challenges we face in the area.  They are also interested in hearing about some of the health issues we are currently facing as beekeepers and hoping to gain some perspective on how vibrant and large the local beekeeping community is.

This event is currently scheduled for Wednesday, June 26.  They meet for lunch and will be ready for the presentation at about 1pm, after a short business meeting.  I have been told to expect around 40 people, men ranging from 35-92 years of age.

34th Annual Festival for the Eno River

The Festival for the Eno River will take place on July 4th (Thursday) and July 6th (Saturday).  They will be open from 10am to 6pm each day and we will have a booth there.  We will need several volunteers in shifts for this booth  and you can (and are encouraged to) sell honey if you are interested.

I will be putting together a sign-up sheet for 3hr shifts and I will post it online, likely through google docs.  I will also have copies at the meeting on Thursday and am always happy to receive an email directly from volunteers.  I will be in touch regarding the online sign-ups.

Durham Center for Senior Life

The Durham Center for Senior Life would like us to host a presentation on basic bee biology, hive organization, and honey production.  They have specifically requested the presence of the Observation Hive, so it would be ideal if you are comfortable bringing a frame of bees with you.

There is some flexibility in the scheduling right now.  They would like to schedule the presentation sometime between Mid-July to the end of August.  The event will need to be on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, and preferably late morning.  The audience will be adults over the age of 55 and you should be prepared for 30-40 minutes of discussion.  Please let me know if there is a day within this time frame that works out for you.

Durham County Public Library

The third Saturday of August, this year being the 17th, is recognized as National Honey Bee Day.  The Durham County Public Library has requested a presentation from us for a program that they are calling “Process of Beekeeping”.  Their primary intention is to cover the importance of honeybees, but there is freedom to direct the presentation to whichever other aspects of beekeeping you may choose to discuss.

Due to liability concerns, they have specifically requested to NOT bring the observation hive or honey.   I can provide you with supplies and materials owned by OCBA for giving the presentation.  The event is scheduled for 2pm on August 17th.

Please let me know if you are interested and can help out with any of these.  It seems as though we are seeing an increase in presentation/event requests in the last few weeks.  I still have a few more that I am sorting details out on before making an announcement.  It will be a really big help if we can split these up amongst as many people as possible.

Have a great week everyone.  See you Thursday.

Rex
