Geneva caught them. Let credit be given where credit us due! But I am grateful for the fact that I could call her, that she responded, and that on Monday, when I return from the beautiful and inspiring AT, I can check for eggs from my hopefully mated this weekend virgin queen. Sigh. Can one ever master beekeeping? I fear not. But no worries. Ever. Bee happy, right?

To be fair, a few weeks ago Valerie asked, "Should I be worried about swarming this early?"
To which I replied "No".
I've been trying to be more terse in my responses but maybe I should have clarified what I meant. I took the question to mean, "Should I be WORRIED about swarming this early?"
Those who know me know that one of my goals in life is to not WORRY about anything, especially my bees (they should be a fun hobby, not yet another source of stress). So I don't worry about swarms, even in April & May. I try to prevent them (if preventing them is even possible) but I don't worry about them.

Does that let me off the hook?  ; )

That's quite a bounteous swarm! Good job, Valerie, for catching it! This proves that the bees are gonna be bees, and they don't consult with us about it first!

Valerie sent an email to the OCBA saying her bees weren't taking any sugar water and she was afraid they might swarm.   I personally assured her that it was too early and too cold for swarms.  Imagine my surprise when she called me to say that there was a swarm in her yard.  It luckily turned out to be one of the easiest swarms I have ever encountered and is now safely in its new home.
With a hive recently swarmed and a new swarm in a hive, I wonder if we can offer her any better advice for their care.
thanks for your help
