Catherine,

Your photo shows a textbook example of the signs of Nosema apis.  It would be interesting to take some bee samples and get a nosema count.  I believe treatment is recommended at levels of 1 million spores per bee and above.

 

I have seen this before about this time of year in nucs and just let it play out.  Mine cleared up as the weather improved, but your milage may vary. 

 

If you want to test for nosema, you can bring me about 50 bees and we will process the sample and put it under a microscope to count the spores.  Tickle about 50 live bees into a small jar or ziplock baggie (similar method to sampling for mites).  Freeze them overnight.

 

Will can also get this done at the bee lab.
