Well Randall we're just going to have to disagree...as usual.

Seeing that you (nor I) do not know what those (not approved) antibiotics are or their concentration levels in the honey there's no way for you to say there is "no" risk.

We do know they are not approved so there is a starting point toward it not being a good thing...then there is the whole illegal operation aspect to consider. Not like these types of folks are concerned about what's healthy or legal.

Secondly there is no way to know how this will be packaged. I'm assuming you mean the 1.5 pounds will be diluted? Still not good! So they mix it in with other honey to dilute it? Not an efficient business model, but now it's spread out more. I'm just saying that since these folks are working in illegal smuggling they don't care, and considering the source (china) folks in that country still think its ok to put lead in paint for kids toys.

Just say'n that crap should be sent back and China officials should have to pay for it!

Depending on moisture content honey weights ~12 lbs per gallon. Most (ok almost all) commercial operations ship via 55 gallon drums. That's 660 lbs per drum...X 4,900 "barrels" and that comes to a shocking 3,234,000 lbs or 1,617 TONS of adulterated honey!

Or using your 1.5 lbs per person that means 2,156,000 people would eat this "if" they didn't thin it out. If they did thin that honey it would be more! :-(

I just think it should be sent back and seeing how we don't know what's in it, other than NOT approved antibiotics no one can claim if it's safe.

No, there is no incremental health risk. Americans, on average, eat a pound and a half of honey a year. No one is going to get their whole yearly pound and a half from this adulterated shipment. The amount of antibiotics consumed via this source is undoubtedly much less than the amount we get in our hamburger, milk, chicken etc. every day.

It seems that these folks didn't learn from the huge honey laundering scheme back in 2008! " The offence involved Chinese honey either being mis-declared as another commodity or trans-shipped through other countries such as India, Russia and Thailand to avoid trade duties.'

What is equally troubling is the ignorant statement by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deputy director Daniel Ragsdale! "Ragsdale was quick to insist there was "no health and safety risk" despite some of the 4,900 barrels of seized honey being adulterated with antibiotics not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration."

Really? NO health risk? No safety issue for humans or BEES? Really? Yet he goes on to say the 4,900 barrels (i'm sure 55 gallon drums) were "adulterated with antibiotics not approved by USFDA" !!  Sure am glad I know where my honey comes from.

Hopefully this will help to deter other in the future, but my how serious the folks on capital hill seem to be taking it i'm sure those smugglers are real intimidated. Now the big question is and where the story comes up short...where are those 4,900 barrels of adulterated (contaminated) non FDA approved going????

eek!
happy beekeeping
