Tom,
Where do you get those traps?
Thanks

Hey Y’all,

Just wanted to follow up to an earlier email.  I complained of Small Hive Beetle populations being high and was recommended an SHB trap that hangs on the side of a frame.  I installed two on one frame next one outside edge and left it for two weeks.  I baited it with a piece of apple and the reservoir was filled about 1/3 full with soybean oil, per instructions that came with the traps.  Soybean oil supposedly confuses tracheal mites too (don’t know the data on that, just hearsay).

Today I entered the hive to check and replace the traps (I have one hive only, and purchased 4 traps…they are very cheap…all four for <10$) and found the SHB still present in the hive itself, but the two traps when removed and examined had about a hundred dead SHBs.  I did not do a thorough examination of the hive, wanting to get in and out as fast as I could, but there are definitely still some running around in the hive and I do not expect that to ever change, but I think they are doing some good.  I do expect that between the bees themselves chasing the SHBs and these two traps that I am making it a living hell inside the hive for these SHBs!

I know, all these SHBs have mommies who love them…too bad!

Tom
