The University of Delaware has a nice on-line presentation which shows an EASY way to get enough of the right bees (nurse bees) to do a good sugar shake test. It can be found on the MAAREC website here: http://maarec.cas.psu.edu/powerpoints/PSsampling.pdf (starting on page 8). Just make sure you don't accidently include the queen in your sample!

FYI- our bees survived the “starvation time” with our feeding them for 1 week.  They seem to be thriving now!
When do you treat for varroa mites?  Some say only when you see them.
