Hello New Beekeepers,
The Orange County Commissioners will be using our regular space this week so no bee school in Hillsborough this week.  We will return on Jan 28 with NCSU Bee Lab research specialist Jen Keller speaking with us about the biology of the honey bee.

I will be doing a little workshop this Thursday evening, Jan 21, at my shop in Cedar Grove.  In this workshop we will be building frames and installing foundation in them.  We will also talk about assembling other hive equipment and whatever else comes up.  This work shop is a little out of sequence with the rest of our classes and may make a bit more sense after we hear Jack Tapp discuss "The Hive and it's Accessories" on Feb 4.  For this reason, I will also be offering this workshop on Saturday, Feb 6 from 9 to 11 am as well as on Sunday, Feb 7 from 2 to 4 pm.  I hope you will be able to attend one of these workshops.

My shop is located at 8411 Hwy 86 N in Cedar Grove.  From Hillsborough, head N on Hwy 86.  After about 10 miles or so you will see a flashing yellow light at an intersection.  Continue N on Hwy 86.  You are getting close (within a mile).  You will see Pope's Tire Service on the right where Efland-Cedar Grove Rd meets 86.  Just past Pope's you will see a white farm house.  Just past the house you will see 3 beat up mail boxes on the right.  Turn right into the gravel drive at the mail boxes.  You are there.  I'm in the big metal building there.  If you find yourself in Caswell County or you see Hwy 49, you missed it.

If you enjoyed Dr. Ambrose's talk on Thursday evening, you may enjoy a book that I am currently reading entitled "Bees in America.  How the Honey Bee Shaped a Nation".  I hope to return my copy to the Hillsborough Library sometime this week so look for it there.  I encourage you to look through your local library for this and other books on bee culture as you begin to define your style of beekeeping.

I have found a couple of free downloadable Beginner Beekeeping guides on the internet that you may be interested in.  The first is Backyard Beekeeping by James Tew.  The other is Beekeeping Basics from Penn State.  Both are worth the read.

Give me a shout if you have any questions and I hope to see you soon.

Cheers,

Lewis
