Hello All,

I delayed sending this message out hoping to be able to include 2 topic in their entirety, but apologize in advance for the inbox cascade so close to the end of the year when many of us are trying to get away for the holidays.
Simpler topic first: I spoke at the  the conference committee call about "the Triangle" having interest in hosting AMIA in the future. The general response was positive and Laura and Christina from the office were very interested in the idea of  regional folk doing some of the groundwork!
The biggest issue emerging lately is a cinema for Reel Thing ( and/or) Archival Screening night. Fewer and fewer can meet the can do the change up, and the tech needs are diverging. Philly screenings called for $6500 in equipment ship and set up. So start thinking about or looking at cinemas in your purview, area, etc. As soon as I get the specific specs, I will send those on.

The 2nd topic is the draft of a letter of support for the NCSA film program.  Skip alerted me to this  article :

http://journalnow.com/ar/560732/?sms_ss=email&at_xt=4cffe3e4e3988660%2C0

after reading it, it occurred to me that a letter of support for NCSA's film school from a concerned profssional group might be useful- either as a letter to the editor of the W-S Journal, or to the UNC General Admin, or even for David Spencer to have framed on the wall to point at.

Below the signature is my very basic off the cuff draft, which was passed out at the meeting. Any and all supplemental ideas, radical or minor changes, and so on are welcome.  In my head the final would be signed as "the members of the North Carolina Moving Image Archivists" and individual names, rank, affiliation etc, below.
I will be glad to integrate and edit the responses, and would hope to have a final draft to send out to this list by the end of January, unless others have reasons for it be on a different schedule.

Hope all is well!

Best Regards
Gypsye

NC is important to film and film is important to NC.

From documentary footage of culture in Western North Carolina to features representing the pirates that preyed on victims of the graveyard of the Atlantic, NC has been represented in film. Productions have brought X dollars to the state in the past 10 years, paid in part as salaries for X jobs.

Films do not spring from a void. From know NC from other presentations, to being able to identify an available pool of well trained local service and talent providers, NCSA's film program is fundamental part of NC being an attractive and viable location for a production to consider.

In the modern era, film is modern medium of storytelling and advocacy. For entertainment, to persuade, to give voice to under represented peoples or perspectives, film is a powerful tool. By having an [arts oriented program of film education- dont want to dis NCSU or UNC-W ( or any other NC) programs], the UNC system helps film makers and other story tellers discover their voice, NC's voice, and take the tradition of southern writing and storytellers into the 21st century with professional skills, reaching  far beyond the geographical boundaries of NC.

The economy is a challenge for each of us, professionally and personally in numerous ways, and we have sympathy for the decisions that must be made for the state budget, but we (implore) and encourage each of you to seek other solutions. To eliminate this program would have immediate and long term negative consequences.
