Hello, All!

The activist in me has been aroused by Dow Chemical/Monsanto's latest
attempt to further poison our food supply.

To be specific, Dow/Monsanto has created a stronger weed killer than
Roundup called Enlist DUO by adding 2, 4-D which was an ingredient in Agent
Orange and other deadly products. The FDA has approved it and now it's up
to the EPA before it gets the final OK. You can get the details in the
National Resources Defense Council's blog post at:
http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/kpullen/24-d_or_not_24-d_that_is_epas.html

Although the primary growing fields may be thousands of miles from us, the
food supply isn't. And of course, there are local farms all around us which
might use this new product. Not to mention, it won't be long before this
product will find its way onto the shelves in our local garden centers and
home improvement stores where homeowners (some of whom think more is
better) will be using it.

We have an opportunity to impact this process by being part of a petition
initiated by Dr. Mehmet Oz during the open comment period. You can sign the
petition by going to http://wh.gov/ilIqc<about:blank>. A minimum of 100,00
signatures are required. If you get to the site and the number is over
100,00 sign it anyway: this is a case where more is really better.

I thank you from the bottom of my organic heart!!

Grow the best plants you can by converting your containers to self-waterers

"the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and US Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) have treated a new pesticide mix called Enlist Duo.

For many years, glyphosate (the active ingredient of Roundup) has been used
to combat weed growth in corn fields. Farmers plant corn that has been
genetically modified (commonly called “GMO corn”) to be resistant to
chemicals like glyphosate, allowing them to spray increasing amounts of
herbicides to kill weeds without damaging their crops. Though the GMO corn
is “protected” from the killing-action of the herbicide, some plants like
milkweed (a staple of the iconic Monarch butterfly - see NRDC Wildlife
Conservation Project Director, Dr. Sylvia Fallon’s, blogpost
<http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/sfallon/from_bad_to_worse_-_nrdc_tells.html>
for
more details) are destroyed, while other weeds begin to develop resistance
to the herbicide.

So what does one do when your go-to herbicide stops controlling weeds in
your field?

The chemical company solution: *Use even MORE herbicide.*

Enlist Duo, the agricultural equivalent of swallowing a spider, is a
chemical combination of two herbicides: glyphosate and 2,4-D (or
2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). Intended for use on genetically modified
corn and soy (the GM crop seed was approved by USDA last week
<http://www.eenews.net/assets/2014/09/18/document_gw_02.pdf>), the Enlist
Duo chemical mix is currently being reviewed by EPA for market approval.
The Enlist Duo registration has garnered a great deal of attention, with
both media (like yesterday’s segment on the Dr. Oz show
<http://www.doctoroz.com/episode/new-gmo-pesticide-doctors-are-warning-against>)
and the public (nearly 400,000 comments were submitted to EPA on the Enlist
Duo registration – including comments from NRDC
<http://www.regulations.gov/contentStreamer?objectId=09000064817771f7&disposition=attachment&contentType=pdf>)
– overwhelmingly opposing the new pesticide."
