I haven't done the experiment with pawpaws.  With tomatoes, the fruit will often withstand a light frost that kills the leaves.  I would guess that pawpaw fruit would be at least as hardy as a tomato.  Why don't you take in half of the fruit before the first light frost and the other half before the first killing frost and let us know which strategy works better.
