and keeps the earth tolerably cool. You'll need to mulch deep to deter

Probably a brain-phart Dave.. Lowers pH is correct. ;>)
Cool ground is probably a plus, as moist ground is desirable for them.
Also softens the footsteps.. as they dislike having toes stepped upon,
and seem to be shallow rooted, ta' boot.
