Ironwood/hop-hornbeam, Ostrya virginiana, is a small tree growing to about 40 feet reputed moderately ornamental (I've only seen it growing in the woods as an understory tree). It is supposed to do well in full sun (unlike the other ironwood, Carpinus caroliniana). It is said to suit medium-moisture to dry soils. The range extends north to the southeastern corner of Manitoba.

Hop-tree, Ptelea trifoliata (to 25 feet, full sun only) might be another possibility. It is not as hardy; its range only goes to Milwaukee/Buffalo, and only along the lakeshore.

My city does have ornamental crabs surviving over 25 years in a similar situation.

One of the persons on the tree committe of the small city where I
live approached me for advice. Several years ago the city had put in
brick sidewalks around the square
with spaces to plant trees. They planted ornamental crabs which by
now have all died.Any suggestions for replacements?
Keith
