I think it's partly that older vines have lots of reserve buds which come out an bear fruit if the first flush of growth is frozen (as often happens here). I think older vines (like older people) get wisdom! They don't leaf out quite so early. Since the blossoms don't show in the new growth for a while, you might not notice that frost was the cause of slow bearing. I think that's partly what happened to us.

Dylan, I think the nurserymen are not honest about how long kiwis take to
bear. If I remember, Hector Black's took 12 years to bear, but it has never
looked back since. I know it's made over 300 lbs fruit in a single years,
but I think it may have run far higher since. Donna
