What's your winter low temperature?   I have 3 PA Golden pawpaws that have have winter-killed at -25+ tho they all have come back from the roots & look quite healthy & are actively growing.  I'm thinking eventually when the roots get established, they may be a bit more winter hardy.  I also have about 30 seedlings of the same that I'm growing in pots until they are maybe two feet high.

our twenty pawpaw seedllings are planted at 8 feet apart.  they were 6-8"
tall and potted.  metal cages are put around and the interesting thing is
how we shaded them:   we had a few dozen polo shirts of odd size, so each
pawpaw cage is wearing a polo shirt.  they received compost, heavy woodchip
mulch and daily watering.  so far, they look great.  thanks for the
recommendations and your experience,
