I've never had this problem, but I suppose I'd stake or trellis the new growth until I could acquire other cultivar of rootstock to graft onto !

My questions remain: How do you support rapidly growing grafts on
spindly understock, in my case 2 year-old rootstock. Do I cut back
the succulent scion growth or splint scion and rootstock, etc? Would
eventually like the trees to be self-supporting.
