I have heard that there are very tasty saskatoons and "ordinary - not
very good saskatoons". What varieties do you recommend and why? I would
prefer them to be very "blue berry like". Also what's your source?
Rodney (Zone 3 and 4)

I've purchased most of my named-variety saskatoons(A.alnifolia) from Bill MacKentley at St. Lawrence Nurseries, in Potsdam, NY. Bill probably has one of the largest collections of named-variety Amelanchier selections of anyone in the U.S., but he doesn't offer them all every year. His offerings are small, well-rooted, tissue-cultured specimens. I usually pot them up for the first season, then plant in their permanent location.

Edible Landscaping (www.eat-it.com) used to offer A.obovata "Jennybelle", a Southern juneberry selection, but I didn't notice it in the latest catalog - but they do have some other varieties

I think Hidden Springs Nursery, in Cookeville, TN also offers some A.alnifolias, like Regent & Smoky.

Mine are all young, not bearing heavily enough that I've had a chance to do a real in-depth assessment of which ones I like best - they're all good, to me.
