My wife and I were just about done with the Comice pears in our fruit
basket when the box from Harry and David arrived. It was from my aunt.
The message on the shipping label said "Happy Birthday from Alice". The
box was cleverly folded so that four layers of cardboard protected the
seven large pears each of which was nested in green crepe paper. There
was no plastic or styrofoam of any sort and the overall presentation was
extremely tasteful. They were Royal Rivieras.

This was a day or two after the recent NAFEX discussion about these two
varieties of fruit. So Deborah and I sharpened our taste testing wits
and over the next week gave the pears a thorough trial. A tough job.
But someone had to do it.

The Harry and David pears were very large. And exceptionally juicy.
Much juicier than the Comice pears which were also not as sweet. The
Royal Riviera pears arrived in a state of almost ripeness that must have
been a logistical feat on the other end. They were really, really good
pears.

By taste alone it seems obvious that the two pears are of the same
variety but Harry and David seem to have applied to the whole growing
and shipping process a wonderfully fine degree of expertise. They are
putting out an excellent product.
