It is possible for an apple tree to live 150 years. I believe the original
Macintosh tree lived well over 100, and only died because it was damaged
from a fire. Besides just living a long time, there are other ways an old
tree can keep going, such as root suckers. The original Hawkeye Delicious
was damaged and died, but suckers came up from it and re-grew. There was
also a story I read about a "walking" apple. It started at the top of a
hill. When it got old, it fell over, downslope, and some of the limbs
pushed into the soil and rooted, then grew into a new tree. Eventually that
tree fell over, and repeated the process. At the time of the story, the
tree had done this three times and had "walked" over 150 feet down the hill.

Ed Fackler - you know your apple history well - you can verify the age of
old apple trees, I'd bet.
