Well, http://www.ibiblio.org/msar/units has over 400 links to MSAR units,
but I have no easy measure of how large those units are. Also, they are a
fraction of all the MSAR units out there. And while for some states the
list may be more or less complete, for other states (most notably Texas) I
know for a fact that the list is very, very incomplete.

Assuming 10 horses per unit, those 400 links alone represent 4000 horses.
I have no good handle on how many more units are out there but I would say
there are at least 400 more units, so another 4000 horses. 8000 in all.

I think there is a tendency for units to state their size (and have group
photos taken) when they are larger than usual. So it may be reasonable to
estimate just 5 horses per unit. So 2000 to 4000 horses in all.

A more detailed head count is possible, but not practical.

Clearly MSAR is a distinct market for goods and services, but it is a very
small market.
