I work in Minnesota and deal with cold situations far too frequently. I have found having looser boots so there's room for circulation better than stuffing warm socks in and not having an air cushion. And regardless of how I look, I can only work as long as my horses and I are comfortable. I keep an eye on them, as we all do. And I found a pair of shearling tapadaros that are worth their weight in gold. They are a soft leather on the outside, and pile of wool on the inside. I can wear almost any kind of boot that I want to and if I keep my toes tucked into them, they're fine. Of course, the regular leather ones are nice for keeping the wind down and the ones I use do make a difference, but I really like the wool ones. I haven't found they are a problem when walking through brush and they hold up very well.

I can't wear wool socks either, but BMW makes a motorcyclist sock that is warm and both short and tall versions.  Motorcyclist have the same problem as horse back riders, cold feet and sometimes problems with water.  I do like to wear tall boots though, whether on foot or on horseback, due to allergies, it gives me more protection.  (pitts being old).

Being very allergic to wool, I can’t even wear them with other socks as a liner.  So you can imagine the difficulty I have in finding warm socks that aren’t wool.  I’ve resorted to wearing heavy hiking socks with the air activated toe or foot warmers whenever the temps drop below 50.   They stay warm for well over 8 hours.  I also figure they might come in handy for whomever we are searching for – so I carry extras and the waist/back warmers and hand warmers just in case.

Any recommendations for warm non-wool socks are appreciated!

For what its worth:
I ride in hiking boots. Whatever kind fits me well and supports me when I hike. The kind that have strong ankle support and a deep tread for great traction when I'm on foot.  I feel that being equipped with good hiking footwear is critical when on SAR missions. We never know when we'll end up on foot for an extended period.

Now I realize that many people can go on and on about the need for smooth leather soles to meet safety criteria. Safety is important! But instead of changing my footwear, I change my stirrups. I have smooth metal stirrups on my saddles so that I can wear safe functional footwear and still maintain a high safety level. This way, if I end up riding several miles before dismounting to perform some, say, tracking duties, I have no need to change footwear. And I'm a SmartWool fan, so  there's no doubt about what kind of socks I wear.

Kate
