Your comment about broadening the experience of members is a good one, Irv.
Our unit also supports the parks in clean up efforts, and thus we have been able to use them for trainings. Additionally, we have been invited by one Sheriff's Dept. to ride in a parade alongside their mounted units.

We assist in manning the central  operations room during storms etc and in the fire season we help out as required might be animal evac, manning the fire choppers refueling site or assisting with road closures.
We also do parades,ANZAC day every year,PR stuff once or twice a year and whatever else.
We are funded to a point by FESA but now and again might be asked to do a job for a donation. Two weeks ago we did the parking for the national polocosse championships here in Perth and that added a few  $ to our coffers.

I believe many MSAR groups or units do other things besides searching. For instance, SE PA SAR does safety and communications for horse events or other major

public activities.  We save the event sponsor having to have an ambulance on site or paying a doctor to set up an aid station, get to ride in some places others can't, and usually earn a gratuity for the organization.  These activities give training in command, control, communications, ICS/NIMS, and experience in first aid, PR, etc.

We have done Paper Chases, cancer walks, parades, similar events. Our members are active as individuals with trails programs, county equine councils, state equine councils, and many local projects, all of which broaden the experience of our members.
