We should expand your hypothectical to two other categories—on a mission and just having a ride.

On a mission you should have been issued a map and have your compass (the no batteries kind).  Your end of task landmarks should have been briefed and marked on your assignment map.  I always try to brief a rally point or physical boundary it is very hard to miss, like a creek or a road that I know is there.  Once you have become disoriented you pick a course to a boundary, hit the boundary, and recover your location by finding a landmark along the boundary.  I generally pleasure ride in about 1200 acres where the trails are unmarked dirt among the trees.  There are several orientation points however, once you get to know the park.

There is a creek that runs through it, and from the top of the ridge you can usually see a nearby water tower, the antennas on top of it, or the glow from the community college parking lot on top of the next ridge.  So you pick a direction and go. If you hit the creek you go upstream to a bridge.  If you hit a road you have it made. The other boundary is a paved bike path with a boundary fence along side it, again you have it made.  Last but not least, you can always tell your horse to take you home. But be careful, once you have given the “go home” or “take me home” order he may not want to stop so you can call out to those looking for you.
