Police Commissioner Ramsey of Philadelphia (PA) today (July 18, 2008) announced that the Mounted Unit will be revived during the rest of 2008 and 2009.

An initial force of 10 horses will be grown to 25 by the end of the period.  Philadelphia Police Mounted was disbanded under the former mayor in

favor of bicycles some years ago. At one time the Philadelphia Police has as many as 150 mounted patrolmen covering the Fairmount Park System,

the center city district and rotating through other patrol zones, such as North Philadelphia and even Chestnut Hill.

The Mounted facility in the Northeast at Krewstown Road was mothballed when the unit was shut down and the City just announced a major rehabilitation of the

Northwest Stables, currently used as a civilian boarding facility and youth program site.
