I have the "joyous" task of mowing our prairie...as I mow the chopped debris flies and I am brushing and dodging trees with the tractors mower deck and umbrella.  Needless to say, whatever I chop flies in the air...so things that come at me are ticks, particules of wood,  a gamet of bugs, snakes, (yeah..had the joy of one of those falling out of a tree onto my hand on the steering wheel yesterday and it happened so fast I had no clue what kind it was, thankfully not a biting kind...but anyway), poison ivy (which by the by folks has become a superweed because of its lovely ability to survive air pollution), poison oak and a gammet of other things.   So I have also the joy of being horrendously "itchy" after a good mow.  So needless to say the  "dust" from all this gets into my clothes to which of course need to get immediately laundered so as not to try to infest the house with the crawly miladys in my clothes.  I am one of those fortuneate ones that does not get poison ivy not to say the guy standing next to me will not get it from me after a mow!

But anyway, riding in the same area or taking the dog out holds huge problems!

A while back we used to be able to get a shampoo for the dogs called MYCODEX.  it was available through our vet, but since he is no longer in business, I cannot get it through him. I think the product was also discontinued...(Hoping not and looking for a source!!). I would about give my right arm to find the stuff as it was incredibly efficeint for shampooing the dog in that it killed fleas, ticks and left the dog smelling good for several weeks.  I have yet to find anything to compare that will leave the heeler odor free now for more than a few days.  As she is an indoor companion, I need a  doggie deoderizer that lasts and works on the bugs.

The article I enclosed below had some great tips, but as with anything, each defense also can carry a consequence including the  "cure" making the victim carrier worse as some can hieghten allergies..  So trying to find the right and no less "happy" solution for the individual can propose a problem.  Helping each other finding products too seem to go here.  I found it interesting that WHITE was an attracting color to certain bugs...

This forum has been great in that the suggestions people offer and their stories that go with the good, the bad and the ugly help us all to find the solutions we need!

Thanks Thor, for your input!  I have never tried sulphur dust on the horses.   Oddly, I rarely if ever have seen ticks on the horses,  and not to say there are not any there,  but have seen them on cattle and I am amazed on how huge they can get after they gorge!

We are deep into the "season" now and as horsemen, most of us have dogs and cats and as outdoorsmen, we all have this situation to be concerned about!

Here is a great online article regarding fleas, lice,  ticks, tapeworms and other nasties.

http://www.futurepets.com/fleasrx.htm

Read this and let me know if you are successfully combating this for your pet and what products you might be using.  Thanks

One of the most neglected worm treated  in horses is tapeworms....Most oof us treat for strongids and other worms, but neglect to treat for them.  Humans can get tapeworms too.  Ticks give us all concern for lyme disease...and the list goes on.

And just when you think its a grass allergy or food allergy, it could be something worse.
