The article cited by Susan re the Georgia search said "near", but a more
recent article says .75 to 1 mile from the vehicle.

A 1-mile radius equals over 6 square miles (circle area = 2*pi*radius),
and some of the area was what orienteers call "fight" terrain, hard to
move through due to heavy vegetation. So you can see how it could take
over a week of searching to find the subject. He was missed on Monday
the 5th.
