My Percheron is 17-2, his predecessor was 16-3.  I am 6-2, 275 and it works.  The biggest problem is fitting him in a trailer.  I carry one of those saddle straps but have never used it, always found a rock or a tree or farm machinery if needed.  The big ones are usually fearless after SAR workups.  The question is whether you are comfortable on him in the field.  You have to be relaxed enough to work from his back and not worrying about nettles and low branches.

Many of us don’t have 2 horses or if they do one is not the usual SAR mount.  As to hauling, it depends on your trailer and tow vehicle. But most take only one and sometimes another member’s mount in their trailer.  Better to have some spare slots in case of mechanical problems or the need to haul the subject’s horse for instance.
