I cannot forget being told about the experienced dressage trainer who was bringing her mount back from an illness (EPM) and the horse simply misstepped/tripped.  She had elected not to wear her helmet because "she was only going to walk or trot".  She was killed instantly in the fall.  Although I cannot say for certain the helmet could have saved her life, it has changed mine.  I do not delude myself into thinking my horse could not be spooked or trip doing simple work and always wear a helmet.  It beats being a statistic.
