Hi Jorene,

I have enjoyed your articles on MSAR and have used many of them to encourage our ground team leaders and managers to give us an opportunity to prove our worth in Iowa. I am associated with the Civil Air Patrol in Iowa and am in the process of trying to organize MSAR within the state. I am also a Ground team leader, so see things from both 'perspectives'.

I emailed Becky this evening to try to help out as I could. Star 1 in central Iowa IS a wonderful group for training also. Star 1 has some great instructors and twice a year conducts NASAR SAR TECH II certification testing. The size of this testing group is of necessity limited to about a dozen persons if I remember correctly. The Civil Air Patrol also conducts training for its SAR members, some of whom also are NASAR SAR TECH II certified.  So yes, SAR is definitely on the radar in Iowa!

The direction that SAR is going within the state is also following the NIMS typing system, which includes different levels.
A .pdf file on the FEMA website that gives some standardization information for SAR. Mounted SAR is not included in this listing, but Job title 35 (Wilderness Search and/or Rescue Technician) is useful for ground team SAR (wilderness being in contrast to Urban which is mostly handled in Structural Collapse I believe).

Anyhow, I just thought I would communicate the direction of SAR in the state. I agree with Becky that we need the availability of mounted SAR units in more areas of the state than people think. The center of the state is mostly cultivated land, so people tend to forget the more 'rugged' areas that are not tillable! That also was my reason for developing the mounted SAR awareness.

Thank you again for your useful articles and wonderful information.
