A two edged sword !

Our experience has been that word of mouth works well and you seem to get
people chasing after you not the other way around - they turn into pretty
dedicated regular members. Of course I am not speaking of a new group -
that needs some outreach.

We are looking at our county fair for a booth BUT the question as yet
unanswered is do we really want a lot of bodies just for the sake of numbers
or do we want to be selective ? Decision not yet made by the management but
certainly a valid point.

Off list, I have been discussing methods of recruiting members, especially
for new MSAR teams.

Besides "news" items in the local and regional freebie horse magazines, and
newspapers (Sunday edition, especially), the method on the top of my list is
to make a tri-fold brochure and print up copies to distribute to (a) local
tack shops,
(b) larger local event venues, and (c) anyone you meet while training or on
a mission, SAR responder or not, who is interested in what you do.

Under (b), I include rodeos and hometown parades, not just the EquiFests,
state fairs, and similar.

Think of the most FAQ you get from interested people. The ones I can think
of are:

Who are you people?
What are you doing?
Are you officers of the law?
Who can join your team?
How can *I* join?
Do I need to know how to ride?
Do I need to own a horse?
What kind of horse do I need?
Do I need experience?
How much does it cost?
How much time does it take?
How can I learn more about it?

Others?
