I would absolutely not require helmets for SAR teams. I wear a
helmet often, including on some SAR missions, but it depends
how, why, where, and when I'm riding, and who (horses and other
riders) I am riding with.

A riding helmet can cook your brains even in *cold* weather. I
will never again wear one while traveling on foot. My most recent
mission, a few weeks ago in below freezing temperatures and snow
on the ground, was one where the snow conditions, the trail, and
other circumstances were not appropriate for horses. So we all
walked. I wore my helmet during an uphill hike for over an hour,
before I noticed I had a problem. Although I was otherwise well
ventilated, due to the helmet I managed to overheat and sweat
enough to soak my inner layer of clothing. Fortunately, I had a
change of clothes in my backpack. Another benefit of a backpack,
in really cold weather, is you can pack the water bottles inside
the pack against your back so they do not freeze. Many people on
this particular search wore camelbacks, and their water lines all
froze.

Good afternoon,

How about wearing a Petzl climbing helmet rather than a traditional =
riding
helmet? I've worn a climbing helmet for over eight hours straight during =
the
summer in the Central Valley in California and during the winter in the
Sierra's with no ill effects. It's well ventilated for summer use and =
you
can wear a hat under it in the winter.

For winter use, we wrap insulating material around our Camelbacks. Or, =
you
can allow the water in the tube to drain back into the Camelback before
closing the valve.

-David
