You may want to check out this tip sheet for how to build a rolling dibble:

http://bse.wisc.edu/HFHP/tipsheets_html/dibble.htm

Not a lot of detail here but it may be helpful.  In terms of performance, your experience will depend on the weight of the rolling dibble, how the dibbles are made (size, shape, etc.), your soil type, and soil conditions when you use the dibble.  I am afraid a certain amount of trial and error may be inevitable...but perhaps others with more experience can offer a "fool proof" design.

Thank you. Yes, that is the question.

So, make a circumference divisible by 6 or 12. Figure the diameter. Then figure the circumference of the old barrel, and divide by the number of points that fit the outer circumference, to get the spacing on the barrel.

I’d like to make holes big enough to plant into, so I am thinking 4” long and tapered 2” down to 1” points?  Appreciate getting folks experience who have used them instead of having to try umpteen permutations myself.

If I understand your question, you need to base the positioning of the points on the outer circumference (a circle at the tips of the points) in order to achieve your desired spacing.

To make a barrel with points to make holes for transplanting, can I just use diameter = circumference/3.14, or do I need to adjust for slippage (the difference between the tip of the point and the actual barrel or depth that the point will go in, probably 4”?) ?  Thank you.
