I've known growers who direct-seed onions in N Illinois in late March for a
mature crop in August/September. Its amazing how the lack of root disturbance
really allows plant development to progress rapidly, especially once the long
days of June get here. Drip irrigation really optimizes bulb size. Fresh seed
planted as soon as the ground can be worked is critical. Excellent soil and
bed preparation is important. And equipment that singulates pretty well and
places seed properly is also very important. But it works well if done right
and eliminates the whole transplant process.

Hello all,
We are researching onion transplant possibilities for this season. We were
wondering if anyone has had experience with direct seeding them in the ground
in a high tunnel for transplant into the field.
Did you put down potting soil first or just plant right into the ground?

Thanks

Chris Corbin
