Thanks Richard,

I had a hunch/hope it wouldn't make a significant difference, but nobody
could explain why the planting guides insisted on straight.
Sounds kind of like the 5 dollar or 50 dollar hole when planting a new tree
argument.

I have a Gilmore hand held pump sprayer. I sprayed a number of beds and my
lower back hurts. In order to spray i have to bend over to get close enough,
especially to get under the leaves. I'm looking for a longer wand so i don't
have to bend over like that. Does anyone know where to get a longer wand?

Thanks

Marty Kraft

Every planting guide I've seen says "roots must be planted straight down"
but does not explain why. If our have a bit of a J shape due to planting
with a waterwheel, is that going to impede their growth significantly?

I've always wondered as well. Here's a study suggesting it doesn't matter:

http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/hs232

"...Treatments consisted of transplants set in the conventional planting with
roots in a ?J? root shape, and transplants set in holes that were enlarged
using a small hand spade to accommodate the entire length of the transplant's
root system in a vertical orientation (straight rooted)...No significant
differences were detected for marketable yield or any other variable during
any period..."

which is good, because of the thousand plants I put in yesterday, I'd guess
only half were completely straight down.

What organic methods have anybody found that works against harlequin bugs?

We got some of that new ORMI-approved Azera (pyganic + azadirachitn) and it
appears to be really effective for squash bugs and flea beetles, also
cucumber beetles, but we only use as a last resort due to it expense --
similar to Entrust.

Azera appears to knock harlequin bugs down, but then 90% get up and start
moving around after 20 minutes.

I think we have the Pyganic 1.4. Would the Pyganic 5.0 make
a difference?

As soon as the brassicas/arugula are gone I don't see harlequin bugs hanging
around on summer crops, but there is a window of infestation in spring when
they cause a headache.
