I grew up running New Holland 256 rakes.  If you can get one with Dolly wheels on the front, they are really nice.  I picked one up for my dad for $250 bucks!  It needed some work, but we had several "parts" rakes at home.  One year during haying season, one tractor was in the shop, one was running a baler and the other was doing field work and that left the truck or the 400 four-wheeler to pull the rake.

By the end of the morning my thumb was incredibly sore, but the hay did get turned. I did bail off the four wheeler a few times when I hit a prairie wasp nest and bumblebee nest.  I didn't want one of those guys to sting me!

To be fair, most rakes like these are ground driven.  Our 20 year old New Holland/New Idea 256 is no different.  We have a tetterer/rake also but the 256 is an old design that has not been changed in several decades at least.  Yeah, the run between 750.00 to 1500.00, maybe even a bit more but I think that price is worth it considering the parts issue.  John Deer has its equivalent.

If you are TRULY having a parts problem then this is a good deal:  http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/grd/2922823135.html

And yeah, we've used our pick-up truck to haul and use them in field too.  Always a great option.
