Small ones like that go cheap at the equipment auctions around here in North
Texas. I am actually looking for a new seven footer with springs for
breaking. I am tired of breaking bolts on the one I have with the fixed
shanks. Seven footers with springs are in the $500-$700 range.
With out springs are in the $200-$300 range.

There are a lot on Craigslist locally now too.

Thank you for sharing that you are having problems with aphids too. I thought
I was all alone. I have been battling them all winter in one building.? I got
everything cleared out, sprayed everything and washed all the plastic down
around the baseboards.? Then, last week I had an aphid infestation on some
over wintered radishes in another building.? I know there were none 5 days
prior as I pulled 15 to 20 bunches and washed them in the house, no aphids.?
I sprayed to kill them, then pulled everything, bagged it and disposed of off
site.? Now I hope I broke the cycle some. I know I have aphids on some indoor
carrots, but I have a bunch of ladybugs coming on Monday. I hope they can
clear them up. I sprayed down the bed with some water, that knocked a lot of
them off, that helped.

I have been checking seedlings as I transplant and checking the tomatoes that
I have planted, almost daily, to see if I have the start of aphids on them.
None, yet!

My Chisel plow is a 5 shank but the shanks bolt on so I can take off the
outer two and put them back on when I need them. Its also somewhat
adjustable as to the width because of the bolt-on shanks. It takes a 3
point hitch though. I can't remember what I paid for it but its pretty heavy
duty. The brand is Northstar out of Yakima, WA. Couldn't read the model
number on the plow but I bought it through a John Deere dealer.

It plows pretty deep, I go down about 18 inches. It will go deeper in sandy
soil but mine chunks up a bit because of the heavy clay and the chunks won't
clear if I go lower. That said it takes a bit of power and more than that,
traction to pull. I have a 4wd and it needs it. I also have to put quite a
bit of weight on the front so I load up my front loader with rocks

[sorry to have cross-posted this to the high tunnels list--I meant it to go
here]

I think I have forced all my early lettuce seeds into dormancy. I'm getting
terrible germination (ie, 30% at best) from seeds that only a few weeks ago
were doing great. I've kept the seed packs in my seedling room, and fear the
recent warmer temps in the room (fluctuating, but reaching the mid- to upper
70s) may have put them to sleep. Will they wake up if I chill the seeds for a
few days in the fridge? any other suggestions?

varieties: black-seeded simpson, new red fire, green ice, tin tin, winter
density, forellenschluss

A few years ago someone gave me a pretty glossy catalog of implements
imported by a place in PA. I lost the catalog and never really knew
the name of the dealership.

They had some pretty sophisticated stuff, though.

Anyone have any idea of what dealer I'm thinking of?

This was NOT Small Farm Implement (or whatever its called)

Thanks again

Hi Deb,

We've sold pea and sunflower shoots at our Ottawa farmers market for the
past couple of years. We sell 2 oz. containers of either for $4.00 each
(there should probably be a price difference for the extra work of cleaning
the shells off the sunflower shoots, but this is simpler and I figure it
averages out). They sell really well early in the season when there isn't
much else available, but sales taper off through July and we generally stop
growing them by August. I've never pursued a wholesale market, but when I
have extra trays left after market, I offer them to restaurants for $12 for
a 11x21 tray, uncut, and ask them to return the empty tray when they're
finished.

Hope this helps,

Rob

Howdy!

I hope this finds you all well...dealing with whichever weird weather you're
in the midst of.

I've grown shoots for myself but am finally trying them for sale. I have a
wholesale buyer who will take them now and I expect to sell some when our
market starts up too.

If you're growing them or have just been paying attention to prices others
are getting, what would you charge for pea shoots and sunflower shoots, both
for wholesale and retail? I'm in the county right above NYC, so our prices
here are a bit whacky (in a good way!).

Thanks in advance for your help!

Warmly,

Deb
