Dave - we are using the JP-6 (with two extra seeders added).  from herehttp://www.mechanicaltransplanter.com/seeder.html this might be a lot bigger and more expensive than you want, but plants the whole bed in one pass, even tightly planted crops with lots of rows per bed.
Here is what we used
Carrots (raw) seed roller is XY-24
Turnips are on Y-24
There are a number of other settings such as the sprockets which affect spacing, so you have find what suites you.  I think the recommendations that mechanical transplanter gives are a good place to start, but we definitely made some adjustments with experience.

This is what I've been waiting to hear - I want it specifically for carrots and turnips.? Are you using pelleted carrot seed, or raw?? And, what is the magic combination of rollers needed for those two crops?? And, we're talking about the JP1 model as seen at Johnny's?? Or, is there a better source??

thanks,
dave
