Trees make 50 percent of their own nitrogen? They need carbs? I don't know
what the universities are saying but if you want to bring intensively planted
fruit trees into bearing you need three things. Nitrogen, nitrogen, and
living soil to mineralize that nitrogen. Use the compost that is most
available and of the highest quality. It sounds like you've done a fine job
of prepping the soil. You should be fine with either compost source. Some
more chicken manure the next season would be good too.
