Plant some early cheap seeded greens and give them a ride in an automatic clothes washer, Alton Brown reports they are excellent for spinach. It is not the first time I have heard this, so it may be worth a trial.

As to harvesting, Eliot Coleman has traveled extensively in Europe and done a lot of tinkering and come up with small results so far. Last time I was there, he and Barbare were on hands and knees with sissors. The "greens harvestor" in Johnny's catalog says "some skill, practice, and exertion are required" ....I think I would want my hands on one for an afternoon before writing the check on that one.
