Actinomycetes, fungi responsible for part of the composting process and the organisms that most people associate with the smell of "soil," form a white band about a foot from the outside of a well-made compost pile. They cannot live in the very hot temperatures in the interior, but need some warmth, which explains their location. Take a sniff--I bet they smell good. They are beneficial, obviously.

As for the clear blobs on your spinach--I have never seen such a thing. Why don't you google spinach diseases and spinach insect pests and see what you come up with?
