I use a similar homemade preservative, but the ratio is different:
3 cups warm water
1 tablespoon sugar (the feed)
1 teaspoon vinegar (it acidifies the water so that flowers take it up faster)
1/4 teaspoon bleach (to keep bacteria from growing & gumming up the stems)
Some flowers, such as zinnias, seem to do better without any preservative, but clean buckets, vases, and water is critical. Flowers Are (Almost) Forever by Libbey Oliver published in 2000 by Brandylane Publishes is a great little book on this topic.

In the Flower Farmer the author says "Your vases should be as clean as your
teacups" Its a cute catch phrase.
