Hi new list thanks to Marcie and Lawrence for starting this. My name is
Beth we have 85 acres in central Massachusetts also very snowy at the
moment. We are entering our 3rd year as a CSA. We had 37 members last year
and will be no bigger this year. We have an ecelectic mix of farm animals
and are hoping this summer to build a barn/farm stand/CSA distribution
center. Ah wishes/money.
Tomatoes we tie ours up. Two sturdy posts at each end of approx 50 ft row,
run a wire between two and support with tomato stakes. Suckers removed from
tomatoes, twine wrapped around stem and tied on to wire. Luckly this isn't
my job :), the guys are considering changing the methods this way: instead
of wrapping twine aroung the entire length of stem wrap a bit at bottom
then run twine up through small circular holers(I am not explaining this
well, we've seen the system in greenhouses) and then tie to wire should save
some time not wrapping. I have an ok picture of our tomatoes if anyone
wants me to e-mail it to you.
Corn tell me everything you know :). Someone else (I deleted the post) on
Csa list mentioned underplanting with vetch as a weed deterrent and as a N
source thought this sounded interesting. I also plan to try planting
sunflower in the corn how far apart should they be? Thanks Beth
