Most vehicles at Carmax are well over $5000, except for a small corner of "bargains."  Otherwise, I would also recommend them.  Their prices tend a little high, but they do give each vehicle a decent inspection and limited warranty, so you have some comfort it isn't a total lemon.  A lot of people in my 'hood seem to drive vehicles from CBS cars on 70 near Miami. Other places to check are that AutoUSA or whatever it is on Glenwood/70 near Lynn Rd., and the Toyota used lot out that same way.  I'm still betting they won't have much under $5K.

That said, if you are buying a car for less than $5000, you are in scary territory already - You would probably do just as well to buy off a private owner thru Craigslist or AutoTrader/Cars.com, and do your own due diligence on the vehicle (take to your mechanic, etc) before purchasing. Then, store away an extra $1000, buy the Haynes & Factory Service Manuals and a good tool kit. Better than insurance = knowing how to fix it yourself.

VERY best thing to do, though: get your own Carfax check on any vehicle. If you are at a dealership, they should offer you the Carfax for free.

Cheers,
Paula

It's that time for me.  We want to get a cheap used car for my son but we don't want to get cheated.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent used car lot that has inventory under $5000?  A person would work too but that's more luck.  Thanks in advance.

Tom
