Thank you for your letter regarding Senate Bill 1209, No Nonvoted Local Debt For Competing System.  I agree that local governments should have the opportunity to provide high-speed broadband service to their residents.  This bill has been amended so that it no longer requires a referendum and is reduced to a study bill.  Unfortunately, it still has a moratorium, which I voted against.  Presently, counties cannot regulate or approve broadband as they do water, sewer or roads, etc.  I support giving municipalities and counties the right to extend broadband to its citizens where private companies have refused.  I await the results of this study, but will only support the bill if local governments are allowed to extend broadband to all of its citizens.

I appreciate your viewpoint on this important issue.
