I ripped my CDs to server and have no regrets or scratches to worry about. I have no idea what to do with my 8 track tapes, though.

We solved this for over 600 CD's in our household in two ways:

1) Harddisk storage.  We use an older computer running Linux to "share"
(export) a large disk that holds all of our CDs.  Then each album
folder has an info file that contains genre and other categorizing
info -- I leave it up to an in-house website to gather album art
and lyric info from the web.  I may store these in the album folders
   too later on ...

A PC acting as a media player on each audio system uses a web browser
displayed on the TV to browse the collection, build a playlist, and
   then playback the files.

2) We have two Sony 300-disc changers and one JVC 200-disk changer to
store the actual discs.  The discs are grouped by genre and then
alphabetical by artist -- with a couple of openings after each genre
to allow for expansion.  We use standard 3-ring binders and those
pages you hate to store only the booklets from the CDs -- facing
both sides of the page.  This way we get 8 booklets per page, but
still need about 100 pages to old them all.  The jewel boxes
themselves are kept in an old cardboard box just in case I get rid
   of a CD or two.

I converted Miss Hunt's album collection last year to CDs. This
year, I start on mine. One thing that is obvious is that I need a
more effective way to store the CDs.
There are too many of them for jewel cases. We have used binder
pockets that hold four CDs each, but they aren't the easiest to
store either.
I ask any of you who have had a similar issue how you solved it
or tried. Anyone have any solutions? Thanks, Roger
