Yeah, its grand dealing with AT&T. There are actually three prices for the iPhone:

What will I pay for iPhone 3G?
If you are upgrade eligible and your account is in good standing, you will pay $199 for 8GB (black) and $299 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.
You have the option to purchase an early upgrade priced at $399 for 8GB (black) or $499 for 16GB (black or white).
Two-year contract required. Coming soon, AT&T will offer a no- commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB.

The first option also counts of you have a first-generation iPhone. Paying a $175 etf would be cheaper than the $399 early upgrade price, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be easy to keep your number under a new account...

And the worst part: the service plans from AT&T are better than almost any international carrier (mainly in the data department: only a few of the int'l carriers have unlimited data).

i'd say the real disappointment is that Apple is allowing AT&T all the
shenanigans that it specifically disallowed with iPhone 1.0, namely:

- requiring a new contract with the purchase of an iPhone
- (and therefore) charging a $175 termination fee for the initial contract

when the wife's phone recently stopped working, i was going to get her
an iPhone. now, not so much.
