I may be wrong, but I believe the TiVo and ReplayTV will work without the
service--you would be forced to program them manually, however. I believe
what you are paying for is the convenience of automated programming of shows
to record.

I think I saw some combo hard drive/DVD recorder at Costco starting at about
$200.
