Correction:  Send the IRS email to hotline AT nocs.insp.irs.gov

Good afternoon!

In my ever continuing fight against spam operations, I discovered a few things I thought should be shared.  Since we all know our ISP's won't do much to block spammers, we have other avenues.
  1. Filter your spam into it's own directory, mine is called 'shit'.  I try to forward and dump the box once per week.
  2. Continue to complain to your ISP, however.  They eventually get tired of complaints about spammers and block all email from the offending domains.
  3. [my favorite]  The IRS wants to hear from you when you receive spam.  Spam marketers are highly prone to avoid tax payment via non-declaration, so the IRS wants to investigate.  Forward the email with full headers, and the domain registration to hotline AT nocs.insp.irs.gov
  4. The NC AG's office tells me they can fine the company for every spam mail received under NC General Statute: 1-539.2A. Damages for computer trespass.  NC Attorney General's Office <AGJUS AT mail.jus.state.nc.us>
  5. For AG's in other states:  http://legal.firn.edu/other_ag/index.html  Florida's AG office was kind enough to provide links to the states' AGs.
  6. Suggestion:  Most people won't advocate this, but I cc: the domain contacts when forwarding to AG offices and the IRS.  A lot of that spam suddenly stops; on occasion, I also get an apology from someone at the spammer.  It's very effective.
