What kind of disk? If it's 3.5" it's likely to be legible to any recent
PC with a disk drive. The file formatting may be mildly problematic -- it
could be plain-jane ASCII encoding (or similar) or it could be some ugly
file format (think binary data + formatting codes). A 5.25" disk might be
similar but drives are less available.

If you can't find the files using a Windows PC, you can make an image (an
exact copy of every bit on the disk) using Linux or similar. (I'm sure a
Windows application would allow the same, no idea what tool would do that
tho.) This would allow examination by knowledgeable individuals --
hopefully to allow extraction of the data to a PC-friendly format.

If you (or your wife's sister's drummer friend) can't locate another word
processor, I'll be happy to look at the files or disk images to try to
extract the data. It's probably preferable to complete the project on a
PC than to start from scratch.
