Chapel Hill authorized to install cameras at intersections

CHAPEL HILL, July 19 – If you run a red light in Chapel Hill, you may get your picture taken. Lawmakers recently approved the installation of computerized cameras at intersections in the Research Triangle town.

Other cities in Wake and Durham counties unsuccessfully pushed for the measure to record people running through red lights. It’s believed the cameras decrease the number of accidents and are a solution to the lack of police manpower. The cameras cost between $75 and $220,000.

Opponents to the SafeLight program claim the cameras are just a quick way to raise money. They also say owners of the vehicles and not the drivers running the red lights may be ticketed. Legislators also approved the use of cameras in Lumberton.

p.s. - i vote for the $75.00 cameras...
